Sunday 26th September 04, Invitation tournament 1 to 5pm

Once again Richard and Francis Jordan hosted a fantastic tournament, which they may have
won had they not been such Gannets at tea, this did not help their semi final one bit, and it serves them right.

On a warm September afternoon we played set after set until it came down to the final,
this was played in front of an appreciative if somewhat noisy audience with
Irene's impromptu striptease bringing the largest cheer of the day.
Eventual, and very worthy winners.
Mike Boyd and Irene (The Stripper) Gawne.
 Runners up.
A Magnificent! Kate Robinson, with her partner Mervyn, who she managed to carry
for most of the afternoon, and! almost succeed in making him look good. No wonder she looked tired.
The real winners? Tennis, and Fun, and I'm not sure in what order.

Saturday 18th September 04, American tournament 2 to 5pm
Run perfectly as usual by Paul Marshall our coach.

OK, so this time it did rain and we all got wet, but still great fun.
Irene And Christine served up a fantastic tea with loads of goodies, which we ate while it poured down outside.
Mens Winner, Mervyn Rice who pipped Mike Turvey by 1 Game.
Ladies Winner Sue Pennington.
Mike is off to hospital this week to get his knee sorted, we all wish him well, and hope to see him back soon.
When interviewed, Mervyn  stated that it is a vicious rumour that Mikes leg could have had anything to
do with his winning of the event, or the fact that Mike had a fall just before the last point of the game.

American Tournament And BBQ, 30th August 2004.
Once again the weather was kind to us, we started with a few spots of rain, then the skies cleared
for an afternoon of excellent tennis. The event was organised and hosted by and  Kate Robinson and Judi Smowton
giving perhaps their last private performance as a double act before turning professional with their own show?
We would also like to thank some of the less prominent people, Judi's husband Richard who did all the BBQ cooking and
Sheila Rice who shopped till she dropped for all the food and also provided a delicious salad. If everyone enjoyed the
event as much as me, your author, it was a huge success

Men's Winner Jim linehan, (41games). Ladies winner  Nicola Nokes
making a first guest appearance and
showing how the game should be played (39 games ). Runners up. Men's Alan Clarke (33), Ladies,
Sue Pennington and Pam Linehan both with (30).

Parent and Child Tournament. Sunday 25th July

We had a very enjoyable Parent and Child Tournament.  The participants varied enormously  from little kids barely able to look over the net and toting racquets almost as big as themselves to middle aged dads carrying the weight of good living.  In many cases the little kids proved very steady and gave better accounts of themselves than the adults. Then there were the competitive 12-13 year old boys partnering  adults whom they clearly felt were not up to much.  It was quite amusing to see the body language of the "child" each time the "parent" of the partnership goofed - the huge sighs and rolling of eyes.  Sometimes the "adult"  would be moved to apologise profusely, other times they would stump off the court and swear they would never play with their offspring again.

The event was split into 4 groups within which each couple played every other couple.  The winners of each group then went into a semi-final and on to a final.  14 couples signed up - a goodly number  The final was between the Iftikhars and the Grabaskeys.  The Iftikhars were probably favourites to win but unfortunately, discord and acrimony broke out in the ranks and the unforced errors mounted.  The Grabaskeys in contrast remained calm, did not dwell on each others mistakes, gave each other credit for good shots and finally won the day.

Irene Gawne - discharging one of her many duties as chairman provided a very good tea which was much appreciated.

American Tournament And BBQ, Saturday 19th June.

The day dawned bright and clear for this event, however this is England and it was not to last.
Heavy rain clouds rolled in dead on time just as we started. Here though our story takes a little un-English twist, for despite a few spots and a gruesome looking sky nothing disturbed play.

Joint Men's Winners, each with a massive 33 games, Alan and Nigel Turner (no they are not related). Lady winner Sue Phillips, a fantastic effort for someone who has played tennis for about three months, so watch out. Lady Runner up Irene Gawne.

The Event was followed by a Barbeque. Judi Smowton provided huge pots of Chilli, and Kate Robinson the Salad. The real work of the evening however was done by our tireless chef Dennis who just "kept on cooking" till all were full.
The result? a good fun event enjoyed by all

Ladies invitation, held Sunday 16/05/04

To have an event so hard fought and yet so friendly would sound like a contradiction, but never the less this was the case. It brought out the best in all of us and provided an exceptional afternoons entertainment.
Irene our chairman was present both to compete and present the well deserved prizes, and all this in absolutely perfect weather.

 Winners

Richard and Francis Jordan in A tough final against David Taylor and Anneka Prior

Our thanks go to Richard and Francis for organizing the tournament, ( pure coincidence that they won, I promise ).
